I’m just curious, what is your favorite male empowerment song? I’m not talking about a neutral song that happens to say words like “man” and “boy” a few times, like “We Will Rock You.” I mean, like women have Ne-Yo’s “Miss Independent,” Beyonce’s “Run the World,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” by 2Pac, and so on. What is your favorite empowerment song specifically for the guys?
Before we go into the heavy stuff in this article, I want to invite you to be part of our social media campaign, phenoMENalAct. The main goal is to raise awareness of male victims of issues that most people believe only affect females, such as domestic abuse. The campaign also seeks to empower boys and men and provide solutions for issues such as prostate cancer and paternity fraud. We’ll be posting at least one thing (quote, video, picture, news article, etc.) per day on social media that fits these descriptions.
Whether your commitment goes on for one week, 30 days, or forever, is up to you. Remember to use the hashtag #phenoMENalAct whenever you post your content. For more information, including the rules, click here.
That said, let’s continue!
If you’re like most people, not many male empowerment songs came to your mind. Have you ever noticed that if you scroll through any quotes website, you’ll eventually see something for females? It doesn’t even have to be positive; it could be talking about how many women are abused, or addressing men who hurt them. How often do you see anything like that for males?
On that note, how many males per year do you think are victims of domestic violence? I’ll spoil it for you right now: according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2011, that number was 5,452,000!
If you think that number is shocking, you’re just getting started. Not enough people are talking about these subjects. Most people are so ignorant that when it does come up in conversation, they shut down just because women statistically have it worse than men, which apparently means that male victims aren't worth supporting. As you can see, people are literally dying over this ignorance.
This 5-part series will set the record straight and hopefully inspire more of us to do something about it. There will be some comparisons between the way males and females are treated, particularly in America. Those comparisons are not there for the sake of making a ridiculous "who has it worse" contest. I put them there because too often, the male side is so overlooked that most people don’t believe they exist.
Click on Part 2 below to see why this imbalance is damaging and even fatal to boys and men!
